My Laptop runs on Windows 7 platform and I recently found out that my Disk space was vanishing @ exponential rate.I wasn't Installing any Softwares or  other applications but the Space on my C drive was reduced to a few 100 Mb from 5Gb.I googled out to find out whether its an Os Issue or was a virus behind this atrocity. But eventhough a myriad of reasons were behind this(Some of the Reasons wont even fit here),I started thinkin that re-installing is probably the only alternative for this.I wanted to make a few changes in the Disk allocation so I installed EASEUS Partition Master Unlimited 3.0.And to my Horror,I found that Windows had reserved a huge Junk space for "Original Manufacturer Recovery Partition".Thats what was causing the issue for me.
So everytime my Pc restarts Windows pops up a message saying this You are running out of disk space.I had accidentely Upgraded my Os from 32 Bit to 64 Bit which was causing this issue. This is currently an Open Issue and is yet to be fixed by Microsoft. But for the Time being the only alternative is to "Upgrade" or "Custom" install the Windows(Upgrade is preferred).Plz make sure you select the Right version(Whether 32 bit or 64)as moving from one to another will create more and more problems as your data might be lost permanently.
Winsxs Folder:
Also I found that my  C:\Windows\winsxs folder was more than 6gb in size.I remember this was around 2 or 3 Gb,but I guess the size Increases as the Os moves towards its senility. And Mind You!Don even think about deleting the Contents Inside this folder as it will definitely make your Crash your Os and all you will see is the BSOD screen everytime you restart your WIndows. However there is one way to reduce the Size of this Winsxs folder,by removing outdated packages which were Installed along with the RTM.This can be done by uninstalling superseded versions of packages by using aBinary called VSP1CLN.EXE which is Shipped in with Service Pack 1.The End Result is that Your Service pack packages will be permanent and the Junk riddled RTM will be removed from your system which itself will recover you more than Half the size the Folder was occupying before.I
System Restore:
And Last But Not The Least the System Restore. Its a very useful functionality added by Microsoft by which we can go to the last saved check point retaining most the system functionalities. But this comes with a heavy price. As the Os transcends from its Youth and moves towards its saturation point,System restore starts to eat up your hard disk space.According to Microsoft,A default System Restore Setting will consume 15% of your Hard disk space. So If you are packed with a hard disk of 500 Gb,then this will occpy 75 Gb.Thats A WHOOOPING size. But thankfully you can over-ride the default settings so that you ensure that you can restore your system successfully but also minimise the disk usage to do this:
NOTE:THIS METHOD REQUIRES YOU TO BE IN ADMINISTRATOR MODE!!!
1)Head over to your Command Prompt(Press ctrl+ r to open the run command and then type cmd. Then press enter.
2)Now we want to change Volume Shadow Copy Service which is the real culprit behind these gobbled up space. So with the Command Prompt On, type vssadmin list shadowstorage and press Enter.Your screen will look like this:
Now If you wanna change the disk usage, then the command sytax is given below:
vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=[drive letter]: /For=[drive letter]: /Maxsize=[maximum size]
Here:
[maximum size]: Minimum  should be 300Mb.It takes multiple suffixes :KB (for kilobytes), MB (for megabytes), GB (for gigabytes), TB (for terabytes), PB (for petabytes) and EB (for exabytes). However if its not mentioned, its takes the default as bytes. Also If Maxsize is not specified then the Maximum limit will not be set.So its very important to Initialize this.So In my case if my Windows is in C drive then my command will look like:
vssadmin resize shadowstorage /On=C: /For=C: /Maxsize=1GB
You can change the Maximum level according to your discreetion.Incase you are getting any error while executing,it might be because you are not running in the Administrator mode and also these commands are case senstive,so I would suggest you copy and paste them instead.

Well That Covers it All.Do hope that I have given you some insight into this and Incase you have any Query,Plz feel free to Holla @ Me!
